India's Medal Count Grows at Asian Games with Historic MMA Achievement
India's Medal Tally Increases on Day Two of Asian Games
On the second day of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, India continued its quest for gold, adding four more medals to its collection. Among these, three medals were secured in shooting, while Suchika Tariyal made history as the first Indian to win a medal in mixed martial arts at the Asian Games.
Suchika Tariyal Makes History in MMA
Despite her compatriot Varun Sanyal's MMA journey ending prematurely due to health issues, Suchika proudly represented India, clinching a bronze medal after a 2-0 defeat to Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo. This achievement is a significant milestone for the Indian MMA community.
Originating from Kiloi village in Haryana's Rohtak district, Suchika is a world champion in jiu-jitsu and has previously competed in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and kurash at the 2022 Asian Games.
After her match, Suchika expressed her disappointment, stating, "I aimed for gold but faced some challenges that hindered my performance. I gave my all to change the medal's color, but circumstances played a role in my outcome."
Currently, India has accumulated six medals, comprising four silvers and two bronzes, while still in pursuit of its first gold.
Shooting Events Yield Three More Medals
The shooting events proved fruitful for India once again. Himanshu Dhillon earned a silver medal, and Rudrankksh Patil took home a bronze in the men's 10m air rifle individual competition.
The duo, along with 18-year-old Parth Mane, secured silver in the team event, achieving a total score of 1898.4 points. However, they were narrowly outperformed by China's team, which set a new world record with 1899.0 points.
Strong Performances in Team Sports and Combat Events
India showcased its prowess across various sports on the second day of the Asian Games. The women's hockey team dominated Indonesia with a staggering 17-1 victory in Pool B, while the kabaddi teams also started strong, with the women defeating Bangladesh 42-21 and the men overcoming Japan 49-24.
In badminton, the men's team achieved a clean sweep against Bangladesh, winning 3-0, with Lakshya Sen, K. Srikanth, and Ayush Shetty all securing victories in their singles matches.
The table tennis teams also excelled, with both the men's and women's teams winning 3-0 against Pakistan, maintaining their strong standings in their respective groups.
In boxing, Sumit Kundu made a strong debut, winning his match against Thailand's Bunjong Sinsiri with a score of 5-0 in the men's 70kg category.
Wushu competitors Roshibina Devi and Aryan also advanced to the quarterfinals in their events.
Swimming and Soft Tennis Present Challenges
Swimming proved to be a tough arena for India, highlighted by Srihari Nataraj's 10th-place finish in the men's 50m backstroke final, where he clocked 25.52 seconds, slower than his earlier heat time of 25.37 seconds.
Other Indian swimmers, including Akash Mani and Heer Gitesh Shah, did not progress past the heats, and Dhanush Suresh was eliminated in the men's 100m breaststroke.
In soft tennis, Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena faced disappointment, exiting in the round of 16 after a close match against the Philippines' Christy Sanosa and Sherwin Ray Nuguit.
