India's July Rainfall Forecast: What to Expect This Monsoon Season

The India Meteorological Department has announced that July's rainfall across India is likely to be below normal, with an expected average of 94% of the long-period average. While most regions may experience reduced rainfall, certain areas in northwest and northeast India, as well as parts of east-central India, are predicted to receive normal to above-normal precipitation. Monthly Rainfall Predictions for July


New Delhi: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the average rainfall across India for July is projected to be below the normal levels. This forecast was released on Tuesday.


The IMD indicated that the rainfall for July is expected to reach approximately 94% of the long-period average (LPA) for the month, which is around 280.4 mm based on data from 1971 to 2020.


LPA is defined as the average rainfall recorded in a specific area over a designated time frame, typically spanning 30 to 50 years.


Certain regions, including parts of northwest and northeast India, as well as east-central India and the eastern peninsular area, are anticipated to experience normal to above-average rainfall, as per the IMD's assessment.


Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the director general of meteorology at the IMD, stated, “For July, most regions of the country are likely to see below-normal rainfall, with the exception of some areas in northwest and northeast India, east-central India, and the eastern peninsular region, where normal to above-normal rainfall is expected.”
