Topics discussed included the upcoming BRICS meeting, relations with neighboring countries, energy security, terrorism, illegal migration, and the Prime Minister's foreign visits.


Upcoming BRICS Meeting in Delhi

The Foreign Ministry announced that the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers is scheduled for May 14 and 15 in Delhi, with India presiding over the event. The spokesperson noted that the representation from member countries will be determined by the respective nations. He also clarified that the expansion of BRICS occurs by consensus, with new members added during recent meetings in Kazan and Johannesburg. Future decisions regarding membership expansion will also rely on collective agreement among BRICS nations.


Relations with Nepal

On the topic of Nepal, Jaiswal emphasized the multifaceted nature of India-Nepal relations. Following the formation of a new government in Nepal, the Prime Minister engaged in discussions with its leadership. He mentioned that Nepal has extended an invitation for the Foreign Minister's visit, with dates to be finalized based on mutual convenience. Additionally, Nepal has requested the supply of fertilizers from India, which is being addressed under the existing cooperation framework.


Positive Developments with Bangladesh

Regarding Bangladesh, the spokesperson indicated that relations are progressing positively. Recently, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister visited India, and India participated in events related to the formation of the new government there. However, the issue of illegal migration remains a topic of discussion between the two nations. India has requested confirmation of nationality for over 2,860 individuals whom it considers Bangladeshi citizens, but has yet to receive a response.


Response to Bangladesh's Foreign Minister's Visit to China

In response to the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister's trip to China, the spokesperson stated that India monitors global developments closely, but its relations with neighboring countries are based on mutual interests and independence.


Energy Security Initiatives

On energy security, India reaffirmed that national interests will guide the selection of energy sources, considering the needs of its 1.4 billion citizens. The government makes decisions based on global conditions and market dynamics. The Foreign Ministry also noted that India continues to supply energy products to neighboring countries, including diesel to Bangladesh via the Friendship Pipeline, and various energy products to Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. New arrangements are also being developed with Mauritius.

Regarding the Prime Minister's proposed visits to five countries, the Foreign Ministry indicated that the first stop will be the United Arab Emirates. Discussions will focus on energy security, trade, investment, and issues concerning the Indian diaspora. Following this, the Prime Minister will travel to Norway, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands, which are recognized as leaders in innovation, green energy, and clean technology. India aims to strengthen cooperation with these nations to bolster its development goals.


Chabahar Port and Regional Issues

On the matter of Chabahar Port, the spokesperson mentioned ongoing discussions with both Iran and the United States. The current regional conflicts complicate the situation, and India is keeping a close watch on developments. Regarding the Chagos Archipelago, India reiterated its support for Mauritius's sovereignty.


Response to Reports on Pakistan's Support from China

In response to reports of Pakistan receiving ground support from China during Operation Sindoor, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that these reports confirm previously known facts. He described Operation Sindoor as a precise and balanced campaign aimed at targeting Pakistan-sponsored terrorist infrastructure in response to the Pulwama attack.
