India's Foreign Ministry Addresses Key International Issues in Press Briefing

During a press briefing held by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to various questions regarding international and bilateral matters. When asked about a comment from a U.S. Congressman concerning the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), he firmly stated that external comments have no place in India's legislative affairs, emphasizing that decisions will be made by the Indian Parliament.

Jaiswal noted that India has taken note of the comments regarding the FCRA, but emphasized that legislative matters related to India are entirely internal affairs, decided by Parliament. He also pointed out that not only India but several countries, including the United States, implement their own laws to regulate the flow of foreign funds.

In response to a question about former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's media interaction on August 5, Jaiswal clarified that it was an event organized by a private media entity, with no involvement from the Indian government. He made it clear that the Indian government does not endorse any views expressed at the event, particularly those concerning the duly elected government of Bangladesh.

Addressing the safety of Indian ships and sailors in the West Asia and Gulf region, Jaiswal stated that this is a top priority for the Indian government. He explained that Indian missions in the Gulf are in constant contact with local shipping ministries, maritime authorities, and administrations to provide necessary assistance to Indian sailors and flagged vessels. He mentioned that a 24-hour helpline has been operational for several months to support these efforts. Additionally, India has reiterated its appeal to all parties to ensure safe and uninterrupted navigation on international maritime routes, protect commercial activities, and avoid targeting civilian infrastructure, citizens, commercial vessels, and sailors.

The issue of Indian fishermen was also prominently raised, with India emphasizing the need for a humanitarian approach, urging sensitivity towards the livelihoods and welfare of fishermen. In response to a question about Sri Lanka, Jaiswal stated that India has urged Sri Lanka to expedite the long-pending provincial council elections and fulfill the political aspirations of the Tamil community as per the constitution.
