A New Year Gift: India's First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
New Delhi, January 1, 2026: On the first day of the new year, the Modi government has announced a significant gift for the citizens. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the country's inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train will soon commence operations. This train will run between Guwahati and Kolkata (Howrah), with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to flag it off in the second fortnight of January.
The train has successfully completed its testing and certification processes. Designed for long-distance overnight journeys, it is fully air-conditioned and built using indigenous technology, promising passengers a fast, safe, and comfortable travel experience.
Route and Stops
Route: From Guwahati (Kamakhya) to Kolkata (Howrah).
Main Stops: Bandel, Katihar, Malda, New Farakka, New Jalpaiguri, New Cooch Behar, New Bongaigaon, among others.
The train is scheduled to depart in the evening, ensuring a comfortable overnight journey.
Fares
The Railway Minister has set the fares keeping the middle class in mind. The estimated fare for a one-way trip from Guwahati to Howrah is as follows:
Third AC (3AC): Approximately ₹2,300 (including meals)
Second AC (2AC): Approximately ₹3,000
First AC (1AC): Approximately ₹3,600
These prices are significantly lower than air travel, where tickets on the same route range from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000. There will be no dynamic pricing.
Features and Amenities
Coach Structure: A total of 16 coaches – 11 in Third AC, 4 in Second AC, and 1 in First AC, accommodating 823 passengers.
Speed: Maximum speed of 180 km/h (successfully tested during trials).
Comfort: Enhanced suspension system, reduced noise, soft berths, automatic doors, and modern washrooms.
Safety: Equipped with advanced safety features and a protective system.
Food: Assamese cuisine will be served when departing from Assam, while Bengali dishes will be offered from Kolkata.
Future Plans
The Railway Minister announced that eight more trains will be introduced in the next six months, bringing the total to twelve by the end of the year. This initiative exemplifies the concept of self-reliant India and is set to revolutionize long-distance travel.
