India's First Made-in-India C295 Military Transport Aircraft Nears Completion
A Milestone for Indian Air Force and Make in India Initiative
The Indian Air Force is set to receive a significant boost with the nearing completion of the first domestically produced C295 military transport aircraft. This development has emerged from Vadodara, where Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has been working on this aircraft. The importance of this event is underscored by the visit of Air Marshal Awdhesh Kumar Bharti, the Deputy Chief of the Indian Air Force, who inspected the aircraft in Vadodara. The final assembly of this aircraft has been completed at TASL's facility, and it is now ready for its maiden flight test.
During his visit, Air Marshal Bharti, who has been praised for his operational insights, toured the final assembly line of the C295. The production of this first aircraft out of a total of 40 marks a historic moment for India's private aerospace sector, as it is the first instance of a private company establishing and operating a full-scale military aircraft production line, breaking the long-standing monopoly of the government-owned HAL in this strategic domain. Notably, the C295 model was previously utilized by the U.S. Air Force for rescue operations in Iran.
Viral Video and Anticipated Rollout
Recently, a video surfaced on social media showing an Airbus C295 being moved out of the hangar at Tata Advanced Systems' Vadodara facility. However, there has been no official confirmation from Tata Advanced Systems, Airbus, or the Indian government regarding the aircraft's operational readiness or the exact timeline for its rollout. In January 2026, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that the first 'Made in India' C295 would be ready before September of this year. The early rollout depicted in the viral video suggests that the program may be ahead of schedule.
Air Marshal A.K. Bharti also visited the C295 final assembly line at Tata Advanced Systems, where the first aircraft is preparing for its inaugural flight.
The Revolutionary Impact of C295 on India's Military Operations
From an operational standpoint, the C295 is poised to be a game-changer for the Indian Air Force. This modern twin-turboprop tactical transport aircraft will replace the aging Avro-748 planes and is expected to perform exceptionally well in challenging high-altitude environments such as Jammu and Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, and northeastern India. Unlike the older Avro-748, which only features side doors, the C295 is equipped with a rear ramp that facilitates easy parachute jumps for paratroopers and allows for the rapid loading and unloading of light vehicles and artillery.
