India Sets a High Target in Second ODI
In a thrilling encounter at Ekana Stadium on Wednesday, Shubman Gill marked his first century as India's full-time ODI captain, while Ishan Kishan delivered an explosive innings, propelling India to a formidable total of 402 runs against Afghanistan in the second ODI.
Opting to bat first, the Indian team began with Yashasvi Jaiswal and seasoned player Rohit Sharma. Mohammad Saleem Safi made an early impact by dismissing Jaiswal in his opening over. Gill entered the fray at number three, partnering with Sharma, who accelerated the scoring with six fours and two sixes before being bowled by Rashid Khan for 48 runs.
Partnership Between Gill and Kishan
Kishan, batting at number four, quickly got into the rhythm with aggressive shots. Gill reached his fifty with a six off Nangeyalia Kharote in the 17th over, followed by two fours in the next over bowled by Safi. Kishan then took charge, hitting a six off Safi, a boundary off Hashmatullah Shahidi, and three more boundaries in Bilal Sami's subsequent over. He completed his half-century with a boundary off Shahidi in the 28th over.
Remarkable Centuries in Lucknow
As Gill approached the 90s, he continued to rotate the strike effectively. In the 33rd over, Bilal Sami bowled, and Gill hit a boundary to secure his 9th ODI century, marking his first hundred since becoming captain. Kishan also joined the century club, hitting three consecutive boundaries in Sami's over, finishing with a total of 125 runs off just 79 balls, including 14 fours and seven sixes. The duo's partnership yielded an impressive 224 runs for the third wicket before Kharote ended it in the 37th over.
Gill surpassed the 150-run milestone with a single off Allah Ghazanfar in the 42nd over but was dismissed while attempting a big shot against Kharote in the 43rd over, finishing with 154 runs from 110 balls, featuring 22 fours and two sixes.
India Surpasses 400 Runs
KL Rahul was dismissed for a golden duck, while Iyer contributed 26 runs off 24 balls, including a six and a four, before falling to Kharote. Washington Sundar played a crucial role in helping India exceed the 400-run mark, scoring 19 runs with the tailenders. India lost all their wickets in 49.5 overs, setting a daunting target of 403 runs for Afghanistan.
Rashid Khan claimed three wickets, while Kharote took four for Afghanistan. Ghazanfar and Safi each contributed with one wicket.
Currently, India leads the three-match ODI series 1-0 and aims to secure the series with a win in Lucknow, while Afghanistan seeks a victory to stay competitive in the series.
