Asia Cup 2023: India's Legacy

The 17th season of the Asia Cup is set to commence on September 9 in the UAE. India has established itself as the most successful team in this tournament's history, clinching the title 8 times out of the 16 editions held so far. Sri Lanka follows closely with 6 victories, while Pakistan has won the championship twice.

India's success in the Asia Cup can be attributed to the leadership of five remarkable captains. The inaugural Asia Cup, which began in 1984, saw India take home the first trophy, and they continued their winning streak in the most recent edition in 2023. Let's take a closer look at the Indian captains who have led the team to victory in the Asia Cup.

Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar was the first captain to win the Asia Cup, achieving this milestone in 1984. Under his leadership, India triumphed over Pakistan in the final, marking the beginning of India's dominance over Asian teams.

Dilip Vengsarkar

After a disappointing performance in 1986, Dilip Vengsarkar guided India to reclaim the Asia Cup title in 1988, with four teams participating in the tournament that year.

Mohammad Azharuddin

From 1988 to 1995, India enjoyed a reign over the Asia Cup, with three tournaments held during this period. Azharuddin captained the team to victory in 1991 and again in 1995, solidifying India's position in the tournament.

MS Dhoni

Although India reached the finals in 2004 and 2008, they were defeated by Sri Lanka on both occasions. However, under MS Dhoni's captaincy, India reclaimed the title in 2010, ending a 15-year drought.

Rohit Sharma

In 2018, Rohit Sharma had the opportunity to lead the team in the absence of Virat Kohli, and he secured the Asia Cup title for the seventh time. He continued this success by leading India to victory again in 2023.
