India Takes Action Amid Middle East Turmoil

In light of escalating tensions in the Middle East following joint military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has stepped up diplomatic efforts. He has initiated a series of high-level phone calls with leaders from Iran, Israel, and key Gulf nations. The primary goal of these discussions is not only to curb violence but also to ensure the safety of millions of Indians residing in the region.

Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further violence, assuring the well-being of the Indian community in this volatile area. He directly communicated with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Israeli counterpart Gidon Saar, expressing 'deep concern' over the unrest in Iran. He made it clear to Israel that India prioritizes 'dialogue and diplomacy' to de-escalate tensions.

Engagement with Gulf Leaders

His outreach extended to Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Kuwait's Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Bahrain's Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Qatar's PM Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and UAE's Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, all of whom pledged to ensure the safety of Indian expatriates.

US Military Actions and Iran's Response

Following the collapse of nuclear negotiations, US President Donald Trump announced a 'major combat operation' against Iran, urging the Iranian people to seize a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to change their government. Israel confirmed missile strikes, prompting Iran's Revolutionary Guard to retaliate against US and Israeli bases in Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Explosions were reported in Tehran and other Iranian locations, with state media reporting 57 fatalities at a girls' school in the south. Airspace in the Gulf was closed, and the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi advised students to avoid travel amid the chaos in this oil-rich region.

Jaishankar's Firm Messages to Tehran and Tel Aviv

During his discussions with Zarif, Jaishankar expressed 'deep concern' regarding the turmoil in Iran, while conveying to Saar that India is advocating for 'dialogue and diplomacy' to ease tensions. He detailed his conversations on social media, emphasizing the importance of 'regional peace and the welfare of the Indian community' with Saudi Arabia; providing security updates to Kuwait; and confirming security measures with Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE amid the 'turn of events.' These reassurances came as Indian workers, primarily in construction, healthcare, and services, prepared for potential repercussions in host countries that have now become battlegrounds.

India's Official Stance: Restraint and Public Safety

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated Jaishankar's calls, expressing serious concern over developments in Iran and the Gulf. It urged all parties to exercise restraint, avoid escalating tensions, and prioritize the safety of civilians. With 18 million Indians in the Gulf sending billions of dollars home, New Delhi is balancing economic ties, energy security, and non-alignment, positioning itself as a voice of stability amid superpower conflicts and proxy wars threatening the global market.
