India's Digital Transformation: Aiming for Viksit Bharat by 2047

Commitment to Digital Transformation


New Delhi, June 28: The Indian government announced its dedication to completing the digital transformation initiative aimed at ensuring that timely and high-quality data is consistently available for effective policymaking, as part of its vision for a developed India by 2047.


This digital shift underscores a strong commitment to enhancing the timeliness, reliability, and accessibility of official statistics, aligning with the demands of a data-centric New India.


According to a statement from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, "Our objective is to equip every citizen, researcher, and policymaker with quality data that facilitates informed decision-making and supports India's ambitious development targets by 2047."


Over the past year, the National Statistical Office (NSO), which operates under this ministry, has made significant strides in its comprehensive digital transformation journey.


Following the initial launch of the eSankhyiki portal on National Statistics Day, June 29, 2024, the initiative has gained momentum with the successful introduction of over a dozen new digital modules, portals, and websites, marking a crucial first phase focused on data dissemination and collection as public-facing services.


In the last year, several key digital tools have been launched to enhance transparency and improve data access for researchers, policymakers, and the general public.


Notable developments include the Data Innovation Lab (DI Lab), OCMS, Metadata portals, and dedicated websites for the National Statistical System Training Academy (NSSTA) and the National Statistical Commission (NSC).


Furthermore, the NSO has rolled out public-facing dashboards for essential statistical areas such as the Social Statistics Division (SSD), Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), Economic Census (EC), and National Sample Survey (NSS) as part of the eSankhyiki portal, granting stakeholders real-time access to India's official statistics.


With these enhancements, the portal now boasts over 135 million records.


In a demonstration of its commitment to innovation and readiness for the future, the ministry has pinpointed seven key use cases for incorporating emerging technologies into its statistical operations.


As it expands its digital ecosystem, the ministry has prioritized the security of its national data assets.
