Aakash Chopra Discusses India's Struggles with Off-Spin

In a recent discussion on JioHotstar, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra analyzed the difficulties faced by India's left-handed batsmen against off-spin bowling, particularly from Zimbabwe's captain, Sikandar Raza.

Chopra noted that Indian openers have struggled against off-spinners during the powerplay, with opponents exploiting this weakness in nearly every match. He emphasized that off-spinners have emerged as a significant challenge for India in this tournament.

He remarked, "Every delivery bowled by off-spinners to the Indian openers is slightly short, wide, and fired in. They are not giving any room. This strategy was evident against the Netherlands, South Africa, and Pakistan. Bowlers like Aryan Dutt, Salman Ali Agha, and Aiden Markram executed similar plans against the Indian batsmen, especially the left-handers."

"India has lost more wickets to finger spinners, particularly off-spinners, than any other team in this World Cup. Typically, off-spinners are seen as easier to handle, but this tournament has been a challenging experience for India," Chopra added.

Strategies to Tackle Sikandar Raza

Sikandar Raza has claimed 24 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.76 in T20Is since the beginning of 2025.

Chopra suggested that India needs a strategic approach against Raza's bowling, stating, "Raza will bowl quickly and target the left-handed batsmen, keeping the ball around the stumps. Unlike Markram, he won't rely on slower deliveries. He doesn't need to alter his pace significantly. With Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma opening the innings, India should position Suryakumar Yadav at number three. As the captain, he should take the lead."

"If Tilak Varma bats at three, it would mean two left-handers are at the crease after the first wicket falls, complicating matters further. Placing Surya at three creates a left-right batting combination, which could pose challenges for Zimbabwe's bowlers. Surya, now in his fourth T20 World Cup, is in good form and must step up to guide the team," he concluded.
