India's Aviation Sector Faces Major Disruptions Amid Iran-Israel Conflict
Significant Flight Cancellations Due to Airspace Closure
India's aviation industry is bracing for substantial disruptions as the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has warned of 444 flight cancellations due to the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, which has led to the closure of crucial airspace in the Middle East. This situation has rapidly intensified as military actions between Israel, the United States, and Iran have temporarily halted flights in parts of Iran and West Asia. On March 1 (Sunday), MoCA announced via X that the cancellations would predominantly affect domestic airlines, following the cancellation of 410 flights the previous day, February 28.
Airspace Closure Forces Rerouting and Grounding
Airlines that typically utilize these routes to save time and fuel are now compelled to reroute or ground their flights. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is collaborating with operators to prioritize safety, ensuring that all decisions made during this chaos adhere to strict operational regulations.
Passenger Safety and Airport Readiness on High Alert
Major Indian airports have entered a state of high alert to manage diversions, control crowds, and assist stranded passengers. Senior officials have been deployed on-site to oversee terminal operations and passenger support. MoCA's Passenger Assistance Control Room (PACR) remains vigilant, tracking concerns in real-time. Travelers are advised to verify their flight status with airlines before heading to the airport, as diversions may lead to further delays.
Efforts to Address Passenger Complaints
The digital platform AirSewa is actively addressing passenger grievances, with 216 complaints logged on February 28 alone, of which 105 were resolved promptly. This platform allows users to file complaints, track issues, and monitor live flight updates, showcasing the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders to provide timely assistance to affected travelers.
Embassy Support for Indians Stranded in Saudi Arabia
In a bid to enhance support networks, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh has provided a lifeline for Indians stranded during their travels in Saudi Arabia. Affected passengers can reach out for help via a 24/7 helpline, while Indian airlines such as Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and Akasa Air have pledged substantial assistance. The embassy has urged travelers to check for updates through specific links provided by these airlines: Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and Akasa Air.
Ongoing Efforts Amid Rising Tensions
As tensions continue to escalate with no immediate resolution in sight, India's aviation authorities are focused on mitigating the impact through technology, coordination, and ground actions to help passengers navigate this challenging situation.
