Confidence in India's Medal Prospects
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has expressed optimism regarding India's performance at the Asian Games. He believes that more medals, particularly in wrestling, are on the horizon as the nation aims to meet its ambitious medal target. "We are on the right path to achieving our goals. Countries worldwide are competing fiercely, and we are steadily progressing towards our objectives," Singh stated.
Historic Archery Achievement by Kumkum Mohod
On the penultimate day of the Asian Games, India celebrated a remarkable achievement as 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod clinched gold in the women's individual recurve archery event. In a thrilling shoot-off against South Korea's Oh Yejin, which ended in a 5-5 tie, Kumkum made history by becoming the first Indian woman to secure an individual recurve medal at the Asian Games.
This victory followed her contribution to India's first-ever gold in the women's recurve team event, alongside teammates Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma. Additionally, she earned a silver medal in the mixed recurve team event with partner Dhiraj Bommadevara.
India's Medal Standings and Team Success
Entering Day 14, India had a successful day prior, securing six gold medals on Friday, which propelled the country to fifth place in the overall medal standings with a total of 76 medals: 16 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze. Notably, the women's hockey team triumphed over defending champions China with a score of 1-0, marking India's first gold in this sport at the Asian Games since 1982 and ensuring direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Boxing Achievements
The Indian boxing team also had a stellar performance, with Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, and Ankush Panghal each winning gold medals. This brought India's total boxing gold count at the Games to three, while Priya Ghanghas, Kapil Pokhariya, and Narender Berwal contributed bronze medals.
Dramatic Wrestling Victory
Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal showcased an incredible comeback, winning gold in the men's 65kg freestyle category. He turned around a 2-9 deficit against Tajikistan's Abdulmazhid Kudiev to secure a thrilling 10-9 victory in the final.
