Union Sports Minister Discusses Preparations for Commonwealth Games 2030
Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Sports Minister, recently shared insights about his meeting with Donald Rukare, the president of Commonwealth Sport. Rukare expressed admiration for India's preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad in 2030, as well as the innovative 'Khelo India' initiative. Mandaviya conveyed this information during an informal gathering with reporters at his residence.
Khelo India Initiative: Promoting Sports at the Grassroots Level
The Khelo India initiative aims to foster a sporting culture in India from the grassroots level. It encourages students to engage in sports throughout their educational journey, encompassing various events such as the Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India University Games, Khelo India Beach Games, Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games, and Khelo India Tribal Games. This initiative has successfully highlighted talents from diverse communities, including both able-bodied and special-needs athletes. Additionally, Khelo India Centres are established to provide essential infrastructure and support to enhance athletes' performance.
Incorporating Traditional Sports in the Commonwealth Games
Mandaviya also mentioned that at least two traditional sports will be included in the Commonwealth Games. Discussions are ongoing regarding which sports will be featured, with options such as Kabaddi, Kho Kho, Malkhamb, and Yogasana being considered.
Ahmedabad's Vision for Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games
A recent delegation led by Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare, along with CEO Katie Sadleir and Director of Games & Assurance Darren Hall, conducted a thorough review of key venues and infrastructure in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, and Ekta Nagar from April 8 to 10. During this visit, Mandaviya engaged in a high-level meeting with Commonwealth Sport leaders, reaffirming India's dedication to hosting a world-class, athlete-focused, and sustainable Commonwealth Games in 2030.
India's vision for the 2030 Commonwealth Games emphasizes athlete welfare, environmental sustainability, and the use of technology for efficient event management. Mandaviya highlighted Ahmedabad's robust infrastructure, connectivity, and institutional support as significant advantages for hosting the Games.
He also stressed the importance of legacy planning, which includes developing lasting sports infrastructure and promoting grassroots participation nationwide. This visit is part of ongoing discussions between Commonwealth Sport and Indian stakeholders aimed at enhancing the vision for a historic centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
