Indian Wrestlers Shine at Under-23 World Wrestling Championships
Komal and Pujari's Remarkable Performances
India's Komal secured a bronze medal in the women's 59kg category at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships. Meanwhile, Amruta Pujari advanced to the final in the 72kg category after achieving two pinfall victories. In the bronze-medal match, Komal triumphed over Kazakhstan's Viktoriia Khusainova with a score of 7–2, according to an official press release.
Komal's Journey to the Podium
Komal's path to the podium included a narrow victory against Canada's Ella Finding, where the match concluded in a 1–1 tie, but she won on criteria. She then defeated Moldova's Madalina Prisacari with a score of 8–3. However, her semifinal match against Ukraine's Alina Filipovych ended in a loss by technical superiority, which led her to compete for bronze.
Pujari's Path to the Gold Medal Match
Amruta Pujari, hailing from Solapur, Maharashtra, is set to face Ukraine's Iryna Zablotska in the gold-medal match. She began her campaign with a fall against Kazakhstan's Sabyrzhanova and followed up with another pin against China's Wenjin Qiu in the semifinal. Pujari established a commanding 7–1 lead over Sabyrzhanova before securing the fall. In her semifinal, she was leading 10–8 when she achieved the decisive pin to secure her spot in the final.
Additional Medal Contenders
India's medal hopes continue with two wrestlers, Sweety and Vaishnavi Patil, still in contention for bronze through repechage. Competing in the 53kg category, Sweety defeated Kazakhstan's Dinara Dauylkyzy in the pre-quarterfinals but faced an 11–2 defeat against Cristelle Rodriguez Dobler in the quarterfinals. Following Dobler's advancement to the final, Sweety was reinstated through repechage and will now compete against China's Xiaptong Zeng, with the winner moving on to the bronze-medal match. Vaishnavi, competing in the 65kg repechage, will face Japan's Haruka Kobaru after her earlier loss to Russia's Ekaterina Koshkina by technical superiority in the quarterfinals. Diksha Malik concluded her campaign in the women's 76kg category, finishing in fifth place.
Greco-Roman Achievements and Visa Challenges
India's first medal at the championships was claimed by Vishvajit More, who earned silver in the Greco-Roman 55kg event. However, visa issues prevented Indian wrestlers from participating in four women's categories—50kg, 55kg, 57kg, and 62kg—as well as five Greco-Roman divisions—60kg, 77kg, 82kg, 97kg, and 130kg.
