On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the Indian women's cricket team for their remarkable achievement of winning the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026. He hailed their victory as a 'splendid' milestone for Indian cricket. The team triumphed over Sri Lanka by a significant margin of 147 runs in the women's T20 final, marking their second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games. This win also contributed to India's overall medal tally, which now stands at seven, including one gold, four silver, and two bronze medals.

A Commanding Performance in the Final

In the final match, India showcased an impressive performance, setting a challenging target of 216 runs for Sri Lanka after opting to bat first. Smriti Mandhana was the standout player, scoring 79 runs off 45 balls, while Shafali Verma added a quick 48 runs from 29 balls. Richa Ghosh played a crucial role in the latter stages, finishing with an unbeaten 49 runs off just 22 balls. Mandhana's innings featured five fours and seven sixes, marking her 37th half-century in T20 internationals and making her the first female cricketer to surpass 11,000 runs in international cricket.

The Indian bowlers then dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order, bowling them out for a mere 69 runs in just 15.4 overs.
