On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Indian weightlifter Chanambam Rishikanta Singh for securing a silver medal in the men's 60kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.


This silver medal is significant as it represents India's first medal at the current Games, following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's earlier bronze. In a message shared on X, PM Modi commended Rishikanta's perseverance and expressed hopes for his continued success, stating, "I am very proud of Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and achieving his personal best. His determination and remarkable performance have brought immense joy to our nation. I wish him the best as he continues to inspire young athletes."


Event Highlights

Rishikanta achieved a total lift of 264kg (121kg in snatch and 143kg in clean and jerk), while Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won gold with a record total of 273kg (121kg snatch and 152kg clean and jerk). Kenya's Joshua Mboya secured the bronze with a total of 260kg (115kg snatch and 145kg clean and jerk).


Snatch Performance


Rishikanta began strongly in the snatch event, successfully lifting 116kg, then 119kg, and finally breaking the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a lift of 121kg, marking a new personal best. Kasdan matched this lift, resulting in a tie at the top after the snatch phase.


Clean and Jerk Challenge


In the clean and jerk segment, Rishikanta opened with a successful lift of 143kg, temporarily leading with a total of 264kg. However, Kasdan responded with lifts of 145kg and 149kg, taking the lead with a total of 270kg. Rishikanta needed to lift 151kg on his final attempt to regain the lead but was unable to complete the jerk, concluding his bid for gold. Kasdan finished with a final lift of 152kg, setting a new Games record.
