Indian U20 Women's Team Begins AFC U20 Asian Cup Journey Against Japan
Kickoff for a New Era
The Indian U20 women's national team is gearing up to start their AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup Thailand 2026 journey against Japan on Thursday, April 2. This match marks a significant milestone as the Young Tigresses return to the tournament after a 20-year hiatus. The game is scheduled to begin at 18:30 IST at Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani and will be available for live streaming on FanCode, as reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
A Journey of Ambition and Preparation
For India, this match is not just a simple opener; it signifies the start of a well-planned journey that has been in the making for months, spanning across different continents with a clear vision. Having qualified for the tournament for the first time in two decades, the team is determined to compete fiercely.
Head coach Joakim Alexandersson highlighted the balance between realism and ambition before the match. He stated, "We are fully aware that we are newcomers in this arena. We respect our opponents, but we also aim to progress through this group and qualify for the World Cup, which would be a remarkable achievement for our nation."
Extensive and Methodical Training
The preparation for the tournament has been thorough and systematic. The team has engaged in friendly matches in Kazakhstan and completed a month-long training camp in Sweden, focusing on building a squad ready for high-level competition.
"We have been training together for three months continuously," Alexandersson mentioned. "Prior to this, we had friendly matches in Kazakhstan and a month-long camp in Sweden, along with inviting Uzbekistan to India. Our preparation has been solid, and we feel ready for this tournament. Since the qualifiers in Myanmar, we have made significant progress in technical, tactical, and mental aspects as a group. We are confident that our preparation has positioned us well for success," he elaborated.
Facing Formidable Opposition
India's first challenge comes from one of the strongest teams globally. Japan, a six-time champion of the U20 Asian Cup, is among the favorites, known for their technical skill and consistency at the youth level. The Young Nadeshiko also claimed the world championship in 2018.
Head coach Akira Ijiri expressed his team's ambitions, stating, "Our objective is clear. We aim to advance past the group stage and win the World Cup. We will strive to achieve this goal."
The Path to the World Cup
The challenge for India is significant, yet they remain grounded in their belief. They recognize the caliber of their opponents while also seeing the opportunity ahead.
India is placed in a competitive Group C, facing Japan, Australia (April 5), and Chinese Taipei (April 8). The top two teams, along with the two best third-placed teams from the three groups, will move on to the quarter-finals, where a spot in the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup Poland 2026 is at stake.
