Preparation for AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup

The Indian U17 women's national football team is gearing up for the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup China 2026 by engaging in a three-match friendly series against Russia. These matches are scheduled to take place at the Matsesta Football Centre in Sochi on April 11, 14, and 17. The Young Tigresses, who have been training in Bengaluru, arrived in Sochi on April 6.

Coach's Insights on Team Progress

Head coach Pamela Conti, who has been with the squad since January, expressed her contentment with the team's development. She highlighted their dedication to training and learning, stating, "I am very pleased with their attitude. Despite their youth, they have shown a commendable willingness to learn and train. I believe they have a bright future ahead," as reported by AIFF Media.

Anticipating Physical Challenges from Russia

The upcoming matches against Russia are expected to present a unique challenge, simulating the physical demands the team will encounter in the Asian Cup, particularly against teams like Australia. Conti noted, "Russia is a very physical team, which will be beneficial for us when facing Australia. They possess advantages due to the climate and the pitch conditions, which are likely to be wet. We must continue to work hard for a positive outcome while preparing for future challenges. Their players are tall, fast, and technically skilled, so we need to apply pressure high up the pitch to limit their space and effectiveness."

Recent Success and Upcoming Challenges

India enters this series following a successful outing in Yangon last month, where they achieved two victories against Myanmar (2-0 and 3-2) in friendly matches. After this, the team continued their training camp in Bengaluru before heading to Sochi.

Group Dynamics in the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup

Looking ahead to the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup China 2026, India finds itself in a tough Group C alongside Australia, Japan, and Lebanon. Conti remarked, "This is a strong group that will pose significant challenges for us. Japan and Australia are clearly superior teams, and we must be realistic about our capabilities. We will strive to make it difficult for them throughout the matches. Lebanon is a team we can potentially defeat, but we must remain cautious, as international matches can be unpredictable. A single mistake could lead to conceding a goal."

Focus on Development in Asian Football

Conti emphasized that the preparation phase is not solely about winning but also about understanding the broader context of football development in Asia. She compared the women's football landscape in South America and Europe with that of Asia, stating, "In South America, teams are more technical and instinctive, while in Europe, the game is highly organized. In Asia, many teams are still evolving and require more time for structured development. Countries like India, returning to the Asian Cup after a long hiatus, need investment in coaching, infrastructure, and player development pathways to reach the elite level of teams like Japan, Australia, China, and European nations such as Spain and France."

Three Months of Intensive Training

Conti has already seen success with the U17 team, having won the SAFF U19 Women's Championship in February with a decisive 4-0 victory over Bangladesh. Over the past three months, the focus has been on establishing a solid foundation in physical, technical, and tactical aspects. "We have concentrated on three key areas: enhancing physical strength, refining technical skills such as body posture and passing, and improving tactical organization," Conti explained. She added, "These months have been crucial for building rapport among players and enhancing their understanding of football principles, which is vital for their development."
