Yashaswini Ghorpade and Manush Shah Advance

On Friday, Indian table tennis players Yashaswini Ghorpade and Manush Shah successfully reached the pre-quarterfinals in their respective singles events at the Asian Games taking place in Aichi-Nagoya. Ghorpade triumphed over Syria's Hend Zaza with a score of 4-1, winning the match with game scores of 11-5, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, and 11-4.

In the men's singles, Shah dominated his second-round match against Iran's Faraji Benyamin, securing a clean 4-0 victory with game scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-6, and 11-5.

Challenges in Round Two

However, not all players had a successful outing. Sreeja Akula faced a setback in her second-round match, losing to North Korea's Pyon Song Gyong with a score of 1-4, with game scores of 7-11, 8-11, 13-11, 7-11, and 7-11.

Similarly, Manav Thakkar was eliminated in the men's singles after a close match against North Korea's U Tae Ryong, finishing with a score of 2-3. The game scores were 11-4, 2-11, 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, and 3-11.

Historic Achievement in Mixed Doubles

In a remarkable achievement, India secured a medal in table tennis at the Asian Games when the mixed doubles team of Diya Chitale and Manush Shah advanced to the semifinals. They achieved this by defeating Hong Kong's world No. 4 pair, Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, with a score of 3-1, with game scores of 11-6, 13-15, 11-9, and 11-5.

This victory guarantees at least a bronze medal for India, marking a significant milestone as it is the second mixed doubles medal for the country in Asian Games history. The first was won by Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra, who claimed bronze in 2018 in Jakarta.

Chitale and Shah will now face a strong Chinese duo, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, in the semifinals.

Other Mixed Doubles Results

In another mixed doubles match, the campaign of Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade came to an end after they were defeated 0-3 by China's Lin Shidong and Kuai Man in the quarterfinals. The Chinese pair won the match with scores of 11-5, 12-10, and 11-9.
