Evacuation of Students from Iran

A flight transporting 110 Indian students evacuated from Iran to Armenia landed in New Delhi on Thursday, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The students were enrolled at Urmia University in northwestern Iran and had been relocated to Armenia earlier in the week.

The evacuation operation was overseen by Indian diplomatic missions in both Iran and Armenia, according to ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

They took a special flight from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, to reach New Delhi.

Among the evacuees, 94 hailed from Jammu and Kashmir, as noted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on social media. The remaining students came from various states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Minister of State for External Affairs, indicated that additional evacuations are underway.

“We have planes ready,” Singh was quoted as saying. “We will be sending another plane today. We are evacuating more individuals from Turkmenistan. Our missions have established 24-hour lines for any evacuation requests.”

As the situation develops, New Delhi plans to deploy more aircraft for the evacuation of Indian citizens.

The current conflict between Israel and Iran escalated on June 13, when Israeli forces targeted what they claimed were nuclear sites in Iran, aiming to disrupt Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In response, Iran launched missile attacks against Israel.

This ongoing violence has raised fears of a broader conflict in the region.

Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 639 individuals in Iran and injured over 1,320, according to a rights group based in Washington.

In Israel, Iranian attacks have claimed the lives of at least 24 individuals thus far.

Israel asserts that Iran is “closer than ever” to acquiring a nuclear weapon and insists it must act to protect its citizens. Conversely, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.
