Indian Seafarers Affected Amid West Asia Conflict: Casualties Reported
Casualties Among Indian Seafarers
According to the Directorate General of Shipping, three Indian seafarers lost their lives and one sustained injuries due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, as reported on Monday.
While specific details regarding the incidents were not disclosed, it was noted that these individuals were employed on foreign-flagged vessels.
The agency confirmed that there have been no verified reports of casualties, detentions, or hostile actions against Indian-flagged ships.
Monitoring the maritime security landscape in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman, the department is keeping a close watch on the situation amid rising tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.
Reported threats to maritime operations include missile and drone activities, electronic disruptions, and various other security issues.
Recent Military Actions and Tensions
On Saturday, a collaborative operation was initiated by Israel and the US aimed at diminishing the capabilities of the Iranian government.
This military action is set against a backdrop of escalating tensions regarding Tehran's nuclear ambitions, with Washington serving as a security guarantor for Israel. Israel has expressed concerns that Iran is nearing the capability to develop a nuclear weapon, which could significantly disrupt regional stability.
Iran has consistently asserted that its nuclear initiatives are intended for peaceful purposes.
In retaliation, Iran has targeted not only Israeli and US military installations but also various vessels in the region.
On Monday, Iranian officials declared that the Strait of Hormuz was 'closed' to shipping traffic, threatening to set ablaze any vessel attempting to navigate through this crucial waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital link between the Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
General Sardar Ebrahim Jabari, an adviser to the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, warned, 'If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guards and the regular navy will set those ships ablaze.'
Impact on Indian Mariners
Reports indicate that an Indian mariner aboard a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman was killed following an attack by a bomb-laden drone boat.
This incident, which occurred near the Omani capital Muscat, marks the first reported death of an Indian national in the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, a Palau-flagged oil tanker was struck off the coast of Oman, resulting in injuries to four crew members. Of the 20 individuals on board the tanker named Skylight, fifteen were Indian nationals, while the rest were Iranian.
All crew members were successfully evacuated, as confirmed by the Oman Maritime Security Centre.
