Mr Singh's India, an Indian restaurant located in Glasgow, has issued an apology following a complaint from boxer Lovlina Borgohain. The athlete, who secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, highlighted that the restaurant's napkins featured a map of India that excluded the Northeast region.

During a celebration for India's boxing team, which achieved a remarkable total of 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver, Borgohain noticed the inaccurate representation of India on the restaurant's napkins and logo. She expressed her disappointment to the management, stating that such omissions 'really hurt us.'

The incident gained significant attention on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users criticized the restaurant for its flawed depiction of India's borders, especially given its long-standing presence as an Indian establishment for over 30 years.

Commitment to Correct the Error

In response to the backlash, Mr Singh's India released an 'unequivocal' apology and pledged to redesign their logo and branding to accurately reflect the map of India, including the Northeast region. The restaurant emphasized its pride in Indian heritage and its commitment to serving the community.

"We sincerely apologize for the incorrect map depiction and will take immediate steps to rectify this. Our intention was never to offend but to celebrate the achievements of the Indian contingent," the restaurant stated in a Facebook post.

"We will update our logo to include the correct map. It was an honor to serve Team India after their remarkable success at the Commonwealth Games, and we cherish the memories created during that evening," they added.

Social Media Backlash and Account Deletion

Following the viral video of Borgohain addressing the issue, the restaurant deleted its Instagram account amid growing online criticism. This incident has brought Mr Singh's India into the spotlight after 32 years of service, highlighting the importance of accurate geographical representations for international brands.

The restaurant's Instagram page now displays a message stating, 'Sorry, this page isn't available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed.'

Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, who was present during the celebration, clarified that there was no confrontation, describing the situation as a peaceful discussion that was promptly acknowledged by the restaurant management.

Ongoing Issues with Map Representations

The issue of incorrect maps of India is not isolated. Various international platforms and media have faced backlash for similar omissions, particularly regarding the Northeast region and Jammu and Kashmir, prompting calls from Indian citizens and athletes for accurate geographical representation.
