Indian Railways Sets New Solar Power Record: A Leap Towards Sustainable Travel
A Green Revolution in Indian Railways
New Delhi: Indian Railways has reached a significant milestone in its clean energy initiative, with plans to install 898 MW of solar power by November this year.
This represents a remarkable increase from a mere 3.68 MW in 2014, showcasing an expansion of nearly 244 times since then.
Currently, 2,626 railway stations are harnessing solar energy, which is contributing to reduced energy expenses, as reported by the Railway Ministry.
This transition is also facilitating a gradual move towards more sustainable railway operations nationwide.
The ministry noted, “This momentum has further accelerated in the current financial year, with 318 stations added to the solar network by November, bringing the total to 2,626.”
Out of the total solar capacity, 629 MW is dedicated to traction, directly supporting electric train services, while the remaining 269 MW caters to non-traction requirements such as station lighting, workshops, service buildings, and railway quarters.
This strategic use of solar energy diminishes reliance on traditional energy sources and enhances the efficiency of railway operations.
The ministry emphasized that solar installations across stations, buildings, and railway land are effectively addressing the increasing energy demands of Indian Railways.
These initiatives are not only promoting energy security but also aligning with decarbonization objectives, reinforcing Indian Railways' commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030.
In addition, the Vande Bharat Express has transformed rail travel in India since its debut in February 2019.
Currently, 164 state-of-the-art Vande Bharat services connect key cities across the country, offering quicker, safer, and more comfortable travel experiences.
The popularity of the Vande Bharat Express is reflected in its passenger statistics, with over 7.5 crore travelers enjoying this advanced train since its launch.
