New Delhi [India], October 27: Arshad Shaikh, the Indian para-cyclist, is making a positive recovery following surgery for a displaced fracture of his left femur. This injury occurred during the men's time trial at the Asian Para Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Currently, he is recuperating at the Chutoen General Medical Centre located in Shizuoka Prefecture. On Monday, Nagma Mohammed Mallick, the Indian Ambassador to Japan, visited him to extend her wishes for a swift recovery and a prompt return to competitive cycling.

The Ambassador reassured Arshad and his support team that the Indian Embassy would provide ongoing assistance until he is fit to return to India. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) are maintaining regular communication with both the athlete and the Indian Embassy in Japan to ensure all necessary support is available during his recovery. The Embassy of India in Japan shared updates about the visit on social media, stating, "Ambassador Mallick visited Chutoen General Medical Centre in Shizuoka to meet Indian para-cyclist Arshad Shaikh, who sustained an injury while competing in the cycling event during the Aichi–Nagoya Asian Para Games 2026. The Ambassador wished him a speedy recovery and assured his team of the Embassy’s continued support until he is medically fit to travel back to India."

Incident Overview and Current Medical Condition

Arshad, who is set to represent India at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, was the sole para-cyclist from India at the Games in Japan. He sustained his injury after falling during the men's time trial at the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka, which is over 250 km away from Nagoya. The fall resulted in him landing on his previously operated left residual limb, causing an injury to the upper part of the femur near the hip. It is important to note that Arshad has an above-knee amputation on his left leg and uses a prosthesis.

Prior to the surgery, Dr. Ameya Kagali, the chief physician for Team India, reported that Arshad was in stable condition, with normal vital signs and a positive attitude. The Indian medical team collaborated with Japanese surgeons to discuss the treatment plan and clarify the nature of the injury and the expected recovery process. The decision regarding Arshad's fitness to travel back to India will be made by his medical team.
