Indian National Arrested in Nepal for Firecracker Possession Ahead of Diwali
Arrest of Indian National in Kathmandu
In Kathmandu, authorities have detained an Indian citizen for allegedly possessing firecrackers, which are prohibited in Nepal, just before the Diwali celebrations. The individual, identified as 29-year-old Raman Kumar Mehta from Motihari, Bihar, was apprehended in Tinchule, located in eastern Kathmandu, on Tuesday.
During a police operation, a significant quantity of firecrackers valued at NPR 400,000 was seized from Mehta's rented accommodation in Tinchule-Bouddha.
The Nepali government has imposed a ban on the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, citing safety concerns. However, many young people continue to secretly obtain firecrackers from local markets in Kathmandu to celebrate Diwali.
These firecrackers are often smuggled from India through illegal routes. The government has also announced a five-day holiday for Diwali, known locally as Tihar, starting November 8.
The festival kicks off on Sunday with Kukur Tihar, a day dedicated to honoring and feeding dogs, and concludes with Bhai Tika, where sisters pray for their brothers' long life, health, and prosperity.
This year, Laxmi Puja coincides with Kukur Tihar on the same day, as the festival follows the Lunar calendar.
