Historic Victory for Indian Hockey

The Indian men's hockey team achieved a remarkable feat by winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Malaysia with a score of 5-1 in the final match held on Saturday. Head coach Craig Fulton commended the players for their determination in securing back-to-back gold medals and making history for Indian hockey.

Fulton noted that the team faced significant challenges following a tough World Cup but managed to regroup effectively before heading to Japan. Their consistent performance throughout the seven-match tournament culminated in a strong showing in the final.

A Milestone Achievement

This victory not only marked India's 85th medal at the Games but also brought their total to 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze medals. Fulton expressed pride in the team's ability to create their own legacy in Indian hockey.

He stated, "Our goal was to achieve back-to-back victories and we succeeded. The boys performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament, especially after the challenges we faced during the World Cup. We had a productive debrief and team-building session before arriving in Japan, which clearly paid off. Our consistency was evident in all seven matches, leading to a strong final performance."

Path to the Final

India's journey to the final included a thrilling semifinal against their arch-rivals, Pakistan, where they emerged victorious with a score of 4-3. Fulton highlighted the importance of overcoming the semifinal hurdle, acknowledging that while the team faced difficulties in the second half, they maintained their composure and belief.

He remarked, "Navigating through the semifinal was crucial. We started strong, but in the second half, we lost our rhythm. Pakistan can capitalize on mistakes, but our belief in our ability to win against them was evident, and we managed to secure the victory."

Looking Ahead

With this victory, India has also qualified for the LA Olympics 2028. The men's hockey team has now made history by defending their Asian Games gold medal for the first time, achieving consecutive titles in 2022 and 2026. This win marks India's fifth gold medal in men's hockey at the Asian Games, following previous victories in 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2022.
