Chief Ministers from Telangana and Kerala, A Revanth Reddy and VD Satheeshan, expressed their sorrow following the retirement of iconic Argentine footballer Lionel Messi from international play. Messi concluded his illustrious 20-year international career, leaving behind a legacy filled with unforgettable moments.

From his debut in 2005 to his last match in the FIFA World Cup final against Spain this year, Messi's career was marked by significant achievements, emotional highs and lows, and a journey of resilience.

Revanth Reddy, who had the honor of hosting Messi during his 'The GOAT India Tour' in Hyderabad last year, shared his feelings on social media, stating, "Dear Messi, you have captivated and inspired the entire football community. It was a privilege to share the field with you in Hyderabad. Football will never be the same without you. Farewell, and continue to inspire. #Messi."

Kerala's Chief Minister Satheeshan also shared a heartfelt video showcasing Messi's greatest moments in the national team, captioned simply with "GOAT" and a heartbreak emoji.

Messi's Emotional Announcement

In a heartfelt statement, Messi expressed his pain over the decision to retire from the national team, stating, "After much contemplation since the final, I want to announce my retirement from the national team. This decision hurts deeply, but I believe it is the right time."

He emphasized his commitment to the team, saying, "I always gave my all, not just in recent years when we achieved success, but throughout my career. I fought hard to bring joy and pride to Argentina through football."

Messi acknowledged the emergence of young talent in the squad, stating they deserve their chance, and expressed gratitude for the support he received over the years. He concluded with a message of love for his country, saying, "Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Vamos Argentina!"

A Glimpse into Messi's Remarkable International Career

Messi holds the record as Argentina's most-capped player and top scorer, with 203 appearances and 124 goals, making him the highest goal-scorer in South American football history.

In 2022, after enduring several disappointments, including the 2014 World Cup final loss to Germany, Messi finally achieved World Cup glory by defeating France, marking Argentina's first title in 36 years.

He also played a crucial role in ending Argentina's 28-year title drought by winning the Copa America in 2021 and successfully defending the title in 2024.

Messi's Journey: Retirement and Comeback

Messi had previously announced his retirement in 2016 after a Copa America final loss but returned to lead Argentina to World Cup victory six years later in Qatar, scoring two goals in the final.

Throughout his career, Messi participated in six FIFA World Cups from 2006 to 2026, netting 21 goals in 34 matches, making him the second-highest goal-scorer in World Cup history.

In the recent World Cup, he scored eight goals and provided four assists, including his first World Cup hat-trick against Algeria.

Despite his retirement from international football, Messi will continue to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). Currently, Inter Miami ranks fourth in the league with 12 wins, six draws, and four losses, totaling 42 points, trailing Nashville SC by 10 points.
