India Starts Strong in Title Defense

The Indian junior women's hockey team kicked off their title defense at the Women's Junior Asia Cup 2026 in China with a solid victory, defeating South Korea 4-1 in their first match held in Moqi on Saturday. As the reigning champions, having secured the title in the last two editions, India showcased a dominant performance, with goals from Sanika Chandrakant Mane, Purnima Yadav, Puja Sahoo, and Madhu Sidar.

Early Advantage for India

India approached the match with determination, creating multiple scoring chances in the first quarter. Their efforts paid off in the 8th minute when Sanika Chandrakant Mane scored, giving India a 1-0 lead. The team maintained pressure on the South Korean defense, earning two penalty corners in the opening quarter, although they could not convert these opportunities. India held onto their lead at the end of the first quarter.

Continued Dominance in the Second Quarter

The Indian team maintained their aggressive strategy at the start of the second quarter, winning another penalty corner within the first five minutes. Despite being awarded a re-take after the initial attempt, they failed to score. South Korea responded by ramping up their pressure, earning consecutive penalty corners in a five-minute span as they sought an equalizer. However, India's defense remained steadfast, thwarting the Korean advances. As the second quarter neared its end, India earned another penalty corner, executing a well-planned variation that allowed Purnima Yadav to score in the 30th minute, extending their lead to 2-0 at halftime.

India Extends Their Lead

In the third quarter, South Korea emerged with renewed vigor, attempting to claw their way back into the match. Nevertheless, India's defense held firm, while their forwards continued to pose a threat on counterattacks. India's persistence was rewarded late in the third quarter when they won yet another penalty corner, which Puja Sahoo successfully converted, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Final Quarter and South Korea's Consolation Goal

With a comfortable three-goal lead, India pressed forward in the final quarter, seeking additional goals. They earned another penalty corner seven minutes into the quarter, but South Korea's defense managed to counter India's efforts. Despite this, India maintained possession and territory, and in the 51st minute, Madhu Sidar scored to make it 4-0. South Korea fought back and managed to score a consolation goal in the 57th minute through KIL Gabin after executing a variation from a penalty corner. Ultimately, India secured a convincing 4-1 victory, earning three points to start their campaign.

The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team is set to face Malaysia next on September 6 in their second match.
