The Importance of Teamwork in Hockey

In hockey, the success of an attacking move relies heavily on chemistry, consistency, and teamwork. The difference between winning and losing often comes down to the finishing touch, whether it's a near-miss or a goal created from nothing. This is where the synchronization among forwards becomes crucial.

Final Preparations for the FIH Hockey World Cup

With just over two weeks until the FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, both the Indian men's and women's teams are finalizing their preparations. The focus is particularly on the Indian Men's Team strikers, including Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, and Shilanand Lakra, who shared their insights on what defines their forward line.

Mandeep Singh: Leadership and Strategy

As he approaches his fourth World Cup, Mandeep Singh has emerged as a leader within the forward line. Drawing from the wisdom of senior players in his early career, he now aims to impart that knowledge to younger teammates. "In my early days, I asked many questions to senior players and learned a lot. Now, I share those experiences with the younger forwards, discussing how to handle pressure and make sound decisions in crucial matches," he stated.

Mandeep emphasizes that success in the circle stems from thorough preparation. "Our training sessions are highly focused. We dedicate significant time to the final nine yards, ensuring we create effective connections and that every attack yields results. We've also practiced extensively on receiving the final pass and converting opportunities," he added.

"A proficient striker must not only aim to score. Hockey is a team sport, and understanding your teammates enhances effectiveness. Every time we enter the circle, our goal is to achieve an outcome, whether it’s a goal, a shot on target, or winning a penalty corner," he explained.

Shilanand Lakra: Embracing Growth

As he prepares for his first World Cup, Shilanand Lakra credits the support from senior players, especially Mandeep, for his development in international hockey. "Whenever I make a mistake, the seniors guide me on how to improve. Mandeep motivates and advises me, which helps me learn and grow," Lakra shared.

For Lakra, the role of a modern forward goes beyond just scoring. "I focus on how I can best serve the team, whether by creating chances, scoring, or making tackles. As forwards, we are also the first line of defense, and effective defending eases the burden on our defenders and midfielders," he noted.

Abhishek: The Key to Consistency

Abhishek has made a name for himself as a reliable goalscorer, attributing his consistency to rigorous preparation, both physically and mentally. "For a striker, consistency begins without the ball. Off-the-ball movement and pressing are vital since strikers are the first line of defense. After regaining possession, building rapport with fellow forwards is crucial before finishing the move, whether that means scoring, taking a shot, or winning a penalty corner," he explained.

He also highlighted the significance of mental strength when under pressure in the circle. "Composure comes from training. Without hard work in practice, making the right decisions in critical moments is unrealistic. We also focus on mental training through meditation and experience. The more you play, the calmer you become when opportunities arise," Abhishek concluded.

India's World Cup Journey

India is set to compete in Pool D of the FIH World Cup, scheduled from August 15 to 30. Their campaign kicks off against Wales on August 15, followed by matches against England and their long-time rivals, Pakistan.
