The Importance of Teamwork in Hockey

In modern hockey, the success of an attacking move relies heavily on chemistry, consistency, and teamwork, with the finishing touch often determining the outcome of a match. A missed opportunity or a last-minute goal can be the deciding factor between victory and defeat. This is where the coordination among forwards becomes crucial.

The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, is just around the corner. The Indian men's and women's teams are finalizing their preparations. As the tournament approaches, the focus shifts to the Indian Men's Team strikers, including Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, and Shilanand Lakra, who shared their insights on what defines their forward line.

Mandeep Singh: Leadership and Preparation

Mandeep Singh on Leadership and Preparation

As he prepares for his fourth FIH World Cup, Mandeep Singh has emerged as a key leader within India's forward line. Drawing from the wisdom of senior players in his early career, he now takes on the role of mentor for younger teammates as they gear up for the tournament. "In my younger days, I frequently sought advice from senior players. Their insights were invaluable, and now I strive to share those lessons with the new forwards. We discuss managing pressure, maintaining composure, and making sound decisions during crucial matches," he stated in a Hockey India press release.

Mandeep emphasizes that success in the scoring circle stems from thorough preparation. "Our training sessions are highly focused. We dedicate significant time to the final nine yards, ensuring we establish the right connections and that every attack yields results. We've also concentrated on receiving the final pass and converting our opportunities," he explained.

"A proficient striker must not solely focus on scoring. Hockey is a team sport, and a strong understanding with teammates enhances effectiveness. Each time we enter the circle, our goal is to achieve a result, whether it’s a goal, a shot on target, or a penalty corner," he added.

Shilanand Lakra: Evolving as a Forward

Shilanand Lakra on Growth and Modern Forward's Role

As he prepares for his first FIH World Cup, Shilanand Lakra credits the support from senior players, especially Mandeep, for his growth in international hockey. "Whenever I make a mistake, the seniors guide me on how to improve. Mandeep is a constant source of motivation and advice. These discussions are crucial for my development," Lakra shared.

For the 27-year-old, the role of a modern forward transcends merely scoring goals. "I focus on how I can best serve the team, whether by creating chances, scoring, or making defensive plays. As forwards, we are the first line of defense, and effective defending eases the burden on our defenders and midfielders," he noted.

Abhishek: The Key to Consistency

Abhishek on Consistency and Mental Strength

Abhishek has established himself as a reliable goalscorer in recent years, attributing his consistency to rigorous physical and mental preparation. "For a striker, consistency begins without the ball. Off-the-ball movement and pressing are vital since the striker is the first line of defense. Once we regain possession, building rapport with fellow forwards is essential before finishing the move, whether that means scoring, taking a shot, or winning a penalty corner," he explained.

Beyond technical skills, Abhishek believes mental fortitude is crucial when facing pressure in the circle. "Maintaining composure comes from training. Without diligent practice, making the right decisions in high-pressure situations is unrealistic. We also enhance our mental resilience through meditation and experience. The more matches you play, the calmer you become when opportunities arise," he concluded.
