Indian Hockey Stars Celebrate Asian Games Gold and Olympic Qualification
Celebrating Success: Hardik and Manpreet Share Their Thoughts
Indian hockey players Hardik Singh and Manpreet Singh, who recently achieved gold at the Asian Games and secured a spot in the LA 2028 Olympics, discussed their plans for indulgent meals following their victory, the positive influence of coach Craig Fulton, and the team's confidence in their offensive strategies.
Historic Gold Medal Win
The Indian men's hockey team triumphed at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the final match, marking their second consecutive gold medal at this event. This victory adds to India's impressive tally of 85 medals at the Asian Games, which includes 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze medals. Additionally, the team has qualified for the LA Olympics in 2028.
'Belief in Our Structure': Insights from Hardik Singh
In a post-match interview, Hardik emphasized the team's faith in their game plan, stating that they believed they could score even in the final moments of the match. He noted a significant shift in their gameplay, moving from conceding goals in the dying seconds to scoring crucial goals instead. Hardik praised the team's defense, saying, "We trusted our structure and training in Bengaluru, and we knew we could score even in the last five seconds. This time, we focused on scoring rather than conceding. Our defenders and goalkeepers did an outstanding job."
Dedication to the Team
Despite facing accommodation challenges and unpredictable weather, Hardik remained focused on winning gold. He dedicated the medal to his entire squad, including the India A team members who trained hard but did not make the final cut. "This medal is for the entire 33-member India 'A' squad. Their efforts helped us improve continuously," he stated.
Post-Victory Culinary Delights
Hardik expressed his excitement for home-cooked meals, particularly craving naan and his mother's rajma-rice and kheer. He shared, "I want to celebrate this victory with my family and friends, especially those who supported me during tough times. After the World Cup, they were always there to keep me stress-free."
'Significance of the Medal': Manpreet Singh's Perspective
Manpreet reflected on the importance of the gold medal, noting that early Olympic qualification is crucial. He stated, "Both our men's and women's teams have qualified for LA, making this tournament significant for us."
Strategic Focus on Pressure
After a narrow semifinal victory against Pakistan, Manpreet highlighted the team's strategy of maintaining pressure and attacking from the start. "Our goal was to capitalize on every opportunity, whether through penalty corners or field goals," he explained.
Coach Craig Fulton's Supportive Approach
When asked about coach Craig Fulton's feedback after the close semifinal, Manpreet clarified that Craig focuses on constructive criticism rather than scolding. "He points out our mistakes and keeps us motivated, understanding that players have ups and downs. His positivity is a great asset," he said.
Personal Celebrations
Manpreet dedicated the medal to his family, especially his daughters. He also shared his post-victory food cravings, saying, "At home, I look forward to my mother's aloo parathas or the Maggi my wife makes so well."
A Historic Achievement for Indian Hockey
The Indian men's hockey team made history by successfully defending their Asian Games gold medal for the first time, achieving consecutive titles in 2022 and 2026. This victory marks India's fifth gold in men's hockey at the Asian Games, following wins in 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2022. Notably, this is the first time both the men's and women's teams have won gold in the same edition of the Asian Games, making hockey the third Indian team sport, after kabaddi and cricket, to achieve a double-gold finish at this continental event.
