Indian Fishing Vessel Stranded in Sri Lankan Waters: What Happened?
Incident Overview
Colombo: An Indian fishing boat carrying 11 crew members encountered difficulties in Sri Lankan waters, leading to a rescue operation by the Sri Lankan navy, as reported in an official announcement on Thursday.
The Sri Lanka Navy indicated that the trawler had crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line and was allegedly involved in bottom trawling activities before it ran aground.
This incident took place near a coastal reef off Delft Island, also referred to as Neduntheevu, situated in the Palk Strait along the northern coast of Sri Lanka.
Commander Chaminda Walakuluge, the media spokesperson for the Sri Lankan Navy, stated that the Indian vessel was engaged in unauthorized fishing in Sri Lankan waters when the accident occurred on Wednesday.
The grounding on the reef resulted in partial structural damage to the trawler, according to the Sri Lanka Navy's statement.
Fortunately, the situation is not critical, and the fishermen are not in immediate peril, the statement added.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to assist the Indian fishermen.
The authorities are currently taking necessary actions in accordance with legal protocols regarding the incident.
The issue of fishermen has been a sensitive topic affecting India-Sri Lanka relations, with reports of Sri Lankan Navy personnel firing at Indian fishermen and seizing their boats for allegedly entering Sri Lankan territorial waters.
The Palk Strait, which separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, serves as a lucrative fishing area for fishermen from both nations.
Incidents of fishermen from both sides being arrested for accidentally crossing into each other's waters are common.
