Indian Boxing Team for Asian Championships

NEW DELHI, Mar 1: The Indian boxing team, featuring Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, is ready to compete at the Asian Boxing Championships in Mongolia from March 28 to April 11.

The selection of the 20-member squad followed a rigorous month-long evaluation process, with athletes joining the ongoing national training camp in Patiala after the National Championships held in January.

According to the selection criteria, finalists in the Asian Boxing Championships within the designated weight classes for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games will secure direct entries into those multi-sport events.

This championship is particularly important as it presents both a chance for medals and a crucial qualification route for upcoming multi-sport competitions.

Lovlina (75kg), who recently won gold at the Boxam Elite Championship in Spain, will lead the women's team alongside Preeti (54kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), and Priya (60kg), all of whom also achieved gold in Spain and have demonstrated consistent performance.

Joining them are reigning world champions Minakshi (48kg) and Jaismine (57kg).

The men's team includes World Boxing Cup Final gold medalist Sachin (60kg), who heads the squad, along with Akash (75kg), who also secured gold in Spain, silver medalist Deepak (70kg), and Ankush (80kg).

Additionally, the team features Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (55kg), a bronze medalist in Spain and silver medalist at the World Boxing Finals, along with Vishwanath Suresh (50kg), Aditya Pratap Yadav (65kg), Lokesh (85kg), Harsh Choudhary (90kg), and Narender (90+kg).

"The Asian Championships are a true measure of skill and consistency. We have focused on selecting boxers who have demonstrated form, discipline, and the capability to perform under pressure. We believe this team can compete effectively against the top boxers in Asia," stated BFI President Ajay Singh in a press release.

The evaluations were overseen by head coaches Santiago Nieva (Women) and CA Kuttappa (Men), with the support staff closely monitoring the athletes' preparations in the camp.
