Praise for Indian Athletes' Performance

Satyanarayan Shimoga, an official from the Paralympic Committee of India, commended the impressive performance of Indian athletes during the Commonwealth Games. He noted that the overall results were 'very good' and expressed the joy shared among athletes, coaches, and support staff.

In an interview, Shimoga stated, 'The overall performance of India is commendable... My athletes are thrilled. You can see their excitement during the closing ceremony. Not just the athletes, but coaches, support staff, and federation members are all delighted, which contributes to their performance.' He reflected on the challenges India faced in the past, recalling, 'It used to be quite tough for us to secure even a single medal at the Commonwealth Games.' He also extended his gratitude to Glasgow and the Scottish administration for their efficient organization of the event.

India's Fourth Place Finish and Future Aspirations

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition in 2030. This event will take place in Ahmedabad, marking India as the second country, after Australia, to host the multi-sport event multiple times, having previously done so in New Delhi in 2010.

During the handover ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to notable Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

On the sporting front, India celebrated a successful campaign, finishing fourth in the medal tally with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. Although this total was lower than the 61 medals achieved in Birmingham in 2022, it is important to note that many of those medals were in sports not included in the Glasgow program. With a smaller contingent of 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India maintained its fourth-place standing while achieving a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian to secure two medals.

With the ceremonial handover concluded, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, the host city for the landmark Commonwealth Games in 2030.
