Indian Athletes Shine at 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow witnessed remarkable achievements by Indian athletes, highlighted by Sharmila Dhankar's historic gold medal in para-athletics. Mallikarjun Kharge praised the athletes for their outstanding performances, which contributed to India's growing medal tally. With a total of 10 medals, including several silvers and bronzes, the Indian contingent showcased resilience and excellence in various sports. Celebrating Indian Athletes' Achievements

On Tuesday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, extended his congratulations to Indian athletes Sharmila Dhankar, Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Gyaneshwari Yadav for their remarkable performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.


Kharge took to X to commend Sharmila Dhankar for making history as India's first-ever gold medallist in para-athletics at the Commonwealth Games. He expressed, "India is immensely proud of Sharmila Dhankar for scripting history by becoming our first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold medallist. Congratulations also to Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Gyaneshwari Yadav on their brilliant silver medals. Their outstanding performances reflect the determination, resilience, and excellence of Indian sport. The nation celebrates your achievements. Wishing all our athletes continued success!"


India's Medal Tally at CWG 2026

India showcased a strong performance on Day 5 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, securing four medals and raising its total to 10. The standout moment was Sharmila Dhankar's gold in the women's shot put F57, marking her as India's first gold medallist in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. Additionally, Shilpa K. Shyla's bronze medal was upgraded following the disqualification of a Nigerian athlete, resulting in a double podium finish for India.


In athletics, Sarvesh Kushare earned a silver medal in the men's high jump, while Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan advanced to the long jump finals. The weightlifting category contributed three more medals, with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver, Bindyarani Devi taking bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu also securing silver. Progress was also noted in boxing and swimming, with several athletes moving forward in their events, including Sajan Prakash and Swatik Patil reaching the swimming finals. However, Tejas Shirse, Sumit Kundu, and others were eliminated from their events.


So far, India's medal tally includes golds from Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar, along with five silvers and three bronzes across weightlifting, athletics, and para powerlifting.
