Significant Changes in Social Media Usage Rules

The Indian Army has implemented major changes to the social media usage regulations for its personnel. According to sources, soldiers are now permitted to use Instagram, albeit with strict conditions.

What Are the New Regulations?

Under the new guidelines, soldiers can utilize social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook solely for gathering information and viewing content. They are prohibited from liking, commenting, or posting their own content.

Additionally, soldiers will have the authority to report misleading or fake posts to their senior officers. All previous security protocols regarding digital activities will continue to be enforced.

General Upendra Dwivedi's Perspective on 'Gen Z'

In a recent discussion at the 'Chanakya Defence Dialogue', Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi spoke candidly about the necessity of smartphones. He acknowledged that in today's world, smartphones and internet access are essential.

General Dwivedi emphasized that for soldiers stationed in remote areas, having a phone is crucial for staying updated on their children's education, school fees, and family matters.

He also highlighted that the Army does not want soldiers to react immediately to posts; instead, they should observe and comprehend the information. Responses can be made after retirement.

From Restrictions to Controlled Usage

The Indian Army has periodically tightened its rules to mitigate security risks, including threats like 'honey traps'. In 2020, the Army ordered the deletion of 89 mobile applications, including Facebook and Instagram.

Now, rather than imposing a complete ban, the Army is moving towards a model of 'controlled usage'. Soldiers can upload their resumes on LinkedIn or access platforms like YouTube and X for professional information.

The Importance of Operational Security

The Army has clarified that the official source of information on social media will remain solely its official handles. For instance, during 'Operation Sindoor', when rumors were circulating on neighboring countries' social media, the Indian Army's official accounts were the first to provide accurate information.
