Security Assessment at the India-Bangladesh Border

Agartala/Aizawl, Dec 20: In light of the unstable situation in Bangladesh, Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, the Commander of the Eastern Command, along with Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding, conducted a visit to the border regions of Mizoram and Tripura. The purpose of this visit was to assess the current security conditions and readiness along the India-Bangladesh frontier.

On Friday, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army shared a post on their official social media account stating, “Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, Army Commander EC, along with senior military officials, visited the Assam Rifles and BSF operating base at Parva in Mizoram to evaluate the security situation along the Indo-Bangladesh Border.”

The post highlighted that the Army Commander praised the Assam Rifles and BSF personnel for their unwavering commitment, resilience, and high operational readiness.

Gen Tiwari and Lt Gen Pendharkar, accompanied by senior Army officials, also inspected the border situation in Belonia, located in southern Tripura.

Four northeastern Indian states—Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km)—share a total border length of 1,880 km with Bangladesh, which is monitored by the BSF.

Tripura is particularly vulnerable to smuggling and cross-border crimes due to its geographical positioning, being bordered on three sides by Bangladesh.

Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that the Indian government is vigilantly observing the developments in Bangladesh and is fully equipped to respond to any situation that may arise.

He noted that following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a series of alarming incidents have been reported in Bangladesh.

In response to the ongoing unrest, Saha mentioned that the Tripura government has been consistently providing detailed updates to the central government regarding the situation across the border.

“Notorious terrorists and criminals have been released from prisons in Bangladesh,” Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio, informed the media during a government event.

Emphasizing India's preparedness, the Chief Minister assured that the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is fully informed about the developments in Bangladesh and is closely monitoring the situation.

“Our drone surveillance capabilities have significantly improved. The S-400 mobile long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system has already proven its effectiveness,” CM Saha added, noting that security measures along the border are robust and well-equipped.
