Indian Armed Forces Engage in Joint Military Exercise in Seychelles
Joint Military Exercise LAMITIYE-2026 Commences
Victoria, March 9: An Indian Armed Forces team has arrived in Seychelles to take part in the 11th edition of the joint military exercise known as 'Exercise LAMITIYE-2026' alongside the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF).
This exercise is set to occur from March 9 to 20 at the Seychelles Defence Academy.
The term 'LAMITIYE' translates to 'friendship' in Creole and has been a biennial training event in Seychelles since 2001, aimed at bolstering military collaboration between the two countries.
This year's exercise is particularly noteworthy as it includes participation from all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces.
The contingent comprises members from the Assam Regiment, as well as personnel from the Indian Navy and Air Force. The Navy has deployed the INS Trikand, while the Air Force is represented by a C-130 aircraft, according to official statements.
The focus of the exercise will be on enhancing cooperation in sub-conventional operations within semi-urban environments and improving interoperability during peacekeeping missions. It will also facilitate skill exchanges, operational experiences, and best practices, thereby strengthening military ties between the two nations.
Throughout the 12-day event, troops from both nations will engage in joint training, planning, and execution of various tactical drills aimed at addressing potential threats in semi-urban areas. The exercise will also highlight the application of advanced equipment and technology.
The training agenda will encompass field exercises, combat discussions, case studies, lectures, and demonstrations, culminating in a two-day validation exercise.
Officials noted that this joint exercise is anticipated to enhance mutual understanding and operational coordination between the armed forces of India and Seychelles.
Additionally, on February 19, the Indian Navy conducted a series of high-level discussions with Seychelles naval leaders during the International Fleet Review 2026 in Visakhapatnam.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, met with Major General Michael Rosette, chief of the Seychelles Defence Forces, to discuss ongoing maritime cooperation, including regular port visits by Indian naval vessels, training partnerships, and hydrographic collaboration under India's SAGAR initiative.
