Indian Air Force Enhances Mountain Surveillance with New Radar System
Strengthening Air Defense Capabilities
New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster the Indian Air Force's (IAF) aerial security and monitoring capabilities in mountainous regions, the Ministry of Defence has signed a substantial contract worth ₹1950 crores with the state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. This agreement will provide the Air Force with two state-of-the-art Mountain Radars, along with the necessary equipment and infrastructure.
These radars are entirely based on indigenous technology, designed and developed by the DRDO Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), while BEL will handle their manufacturing, installation, and commissioning.
Features of the Mountain Radar
Key Features:
- Specifically designed for deployment at high altitudes.
- Ability to track enemy fighter jets, missiles, drones, and any low-flying objects.
- Operational range of approximately 300 kilometers.
- Can be easily transported to mountainous areas via helicopter.
- Will integrate with the Integrated Air Command, Control and Communication System (IACCCS).
- Particularly useful for monitoring the borders with China and Pakistan.
Impact on National Security
According to the Ministry of Defence, the deployment of these radars will fill the air search gaps in high-altitude areas, enabling close monitoring of any enemy movements and enhancing aerial security. This deal falls under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, promoting the initiatives of self-reliant India and Make in India.
Expert Opinions:
Defense experts suggest that traditional radar systems have limitations in mountainous terrains. The new mountain radars will overcome these challenges, effectively countering enemy stealth operations, drone attacks, and low-altitude threats. This advancement is expected to significantly enhance the combat capabilities and preparedness of the Air Force.
BEL's Chairman and Managing Director hailed this deal as a victory for indigenous defense technology, assuring timely delivery and support from the company.
This agreement not only strengthens the Air Force but also reduces dependency on foreign imports. The Ministry of Defence has described it as a crucial step towards enhancing national security.
