India Urges Dialogue Amid Escalating Conflict in Iran and the Gulf Region

India's Call for Diplomacy in the Gulf Crisis

New Delhi: On Tuesday, India reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and diplomatic efforts to address the escalating conflict in Iran and the Gulf region, emphasizing its ongoing vigilance regarding the situation and its implications for national interests.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its deep concern following the onset of the conflict on February 28, 2026, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and prioritize civilian safety. The situation has worsened significantly during the holy month of Ramadan, according to the MEA's statement.

The MEA noted that the conflict has intensified and spread to other nations, resulting in increased destruction and loss of life, while normalcy and economic activities have been severely disrupted. As a neighboring country with vital interests in regional stability, India is understandably anxious about these developments.

The spokesperson for the MEA highlighted that India is actively engaging with regional governments and key partners, with discussions held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar with their counterparts.

With nearly ten million Indian citizens residing and working in the Gulf, their safety is a top priority. India cannot ignore any developments that could adversely affect them. The trade and energy supply chains that pass through this region are crucial, and any significant disruption could have dire consequences for the Indian economy. The MEA also condemned attacks on merchant shipping, noting that some Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives or gone missing due to such incidents in recent days.

In light of these circumstances, India strongly reiterates its call for dialogue and diplomacy, advocating for a swift resolution to the conflict. The loss of life is deeply regrettable, and the country expresses its condolences. Indian embassies and consulates in affected nations are maintaining close contact with Indian nationals and community organizations, providing regular advisories and assistance to those impacted by the conflict. They will continue to proactively address various consular issues arising from the situation.

This statement from the MEA coincided with criticism from the Congress party and the INDIA bloc regarding the government's stance on Iran, particularly following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi condemned.

Nevertheless, many experts and political analysts have noted that Prime Minister Modi's government has acted with 'utmost caution,' prioritizing national interests above all else. They referenced historical instances where previous Congress-led administrations maintained a neutral stance or aligned with global powers while distancing themselves from oppressive regimes, such as those of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Gaddafi in Libya.
