India U23 Men's Team Falls Short Against Tajikistan in Tri-Nation Championship
India U23 Team Loses to Tajikistan in Championship Decider
On Tuesday, the India U23 men's national football team suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Tajikistan in the final match of the U23 Tri-Nation Championship 2026, held at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh, as reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
The only goal of the match came from Tajikistan's midfielder Khaitov Azizbek in the 9th minute. Despite the Blue Colts creating several scoring opportunities and maintaining pressure throughout the game, they could not find the equalizer. With this victory, Tajikistan secured the championship title with two wins and clean sheets in both matches, while India finished in second place with one win, and Bhutan ended up third without any points.
Tajikistan Takes Early Lead
The Blue Colts started strong, applying pressure on the Tajikistan defense right from the beginning. In the eighth minute, Suhail had a chance to score after receiving a precise pass from Mohammed Sanan, but he missed the target.
Just a minute later, Tajikistan struck first. Azizbek's long-range shot deflected off Pramveer Singh, misleading India’s goalkeeper Mohan Raj, who was unable to prevent the ball from entering the net.
Intense First Half Action
India responded well, creating several chances. Macarton was pivotal in the attack, sending dangerous balls into the box. In the 14th minute, he made a great run down the right and set up Suhail, whose close-range shot was saved by Tajikistan's captain and goalkeeper Gaforov Safarmad.
The match turned into a back-and-forth contest, with both teams generating opportunities. Tajikistan nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute, but Mohan Raj made a crucial double save to keep India in contention.
The Blue Colts continued to threaten from the flanks, with Sanan delivering enticing crosses, but the forwards struggled to convert. Gaforov had to leave the field due to injury, and Mahmudzoda Shahobiddin took over as goalkeeper.
As the first half progressed, India pushed for an equalizer, with Tomba Singh and Macarton attempting long-range shots, but neither troubled the substitute goalkeeper. The Blue Colts went into halftime trailing 0-1.
Second Half Efforts Fall Short
At the start of the second half, coach Moosa brought on Lalthankima and Lalremtluanga Fanai to boost the attack. The substitutions added energy, with Fanai delivering a threatening free-kick in the 50th minute, but Pramveer could not connect.
India kept pressing and came close to scoring just after the hour mark with a well-executed play, but Mahmudzoda denied them again. Mohan Raj was called into action shortly after, making a smart save against Gafurov during a counterattack.
The best chance for India came in the 69th minute when substitute Adison Singh Thokchom sent in a cross from the left, but Lalthankima failed to convert from close range.
As the match neared its conclusion, Tajikistan adopted a defensive strategy, looking to counterattack, while India relentlessly sought the equalizer. In the 78th minute, Lalrinliana Hnamte provided a fine through ball to Suhail, but the striker's shot went wide under pressure.
India continued to push in the final moments, with Ronney Wilson making a vital interception to maintain the one-goal deficit. In stoppage time, Fanai earned a free-kick just outside the box, but Suhail's attempt went over the crossbar. Despite their spirited performance and numerous chances, the Blue Colts could not penetrate the solid Tajikistan defense, allowing the visitors to claim the championship title.
