India's AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers Journey Begins

The India U20 men's national football team is set to commence their AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers on August 31, 2026, facing Syria at the Do'stlik Stadium in Tashkent, as announced by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Placed in Group B with Uzbekistan and Bangladesh, India aims to qualify for the AFC U20 Asian Cup for the first time since 2006. Historically, the Blue Colts have a notable legacy in this tournament, having shared the championship with Iran in 1974, but they have not made it to the finals in the last twenty years.

Coach Gawali's Strategy: Focus on Each Match

With only the group winners and seven best runners-up advancing to the Asian Cup, the match against Syria is crucial for head coach Mahesh Gawali and his team. Gawali emphasized the significance of the opening game, stating, "The first match is always critical in a qualifying tournament. We have trained diligently, and the players are committed. Our strategy is to take it one match at a time, maintain discipline, and perform our best on the field. We have clear objectives, and now it's about executing our game plan effectively."

Preparation and Friendlies

India narrowly missed qualifying in the previous edition, finishing just short as one of the best runners-up due to goal difference. The current squad includes defender Malemngamba Singh Thokchom, the only player from the last qualifiers.

The team has undergone extensive preparations, starting with trials in June, followed by a continuous training camp that allowed the coaching staff to evaluate players and refine tactical strategies.

In August, India participated in four international friendlies, facing Singapore and Yemen. They achieved two victories against Singapore (3-0 and 1-0), drew with Yemen (0-0), and won the second match against Yemen (1-0). Gawali noted, "These friendlies were beneficial for assessing the team, identifying areas for improvement, and fostering teamwork. Our primary goal was to enhance our readiness for the qualifiers, and I believe these matches have contributed positively to that aim."

Acclimatization in Tashkent

The squad arrived in Tashkent on August 27, allowing them several days to adjust to the local conditions before their first match. They have conducted two training sessions on August 28 and 29, with a final practice scheduled for Sunday evening.

Tashkent's afternoons are hot and sunny, while evenings offer a more pleasant climate. The city's continental weather necessitates acclimatization, which is a vital aspect of the team's preparation.

Facing Syria: A Tough Challenge

India's initial opponents, Syria, have faced the Blue Colts only twice in competitive matches at this level, both during the AFC Youth Championship (U19), resulting in a 1-0 defeat in 1996 and a 2-1 loss in 2004.

Under the guidance of Dutch coach Arno Buitenweg, Syria presents a formidable challenge. Gawali acknowledged their experience, stating, "Syria is a strong team with a wealth of experience at this level, and we hold them in high regard. We have analyzed their play and have a strategy in mind, but our primary focus will be on our performance. We must remain organized, particularly defensively, and capitalize on our chances. It will be a competitive match, and we need to maintain concentration for the entire 90 minutes."

Syria boasts a strong history in youth football, having won the AFC U19 Championship in 1994 and consistently qualifying for recent AFC U20 Asian Cups, making them a challenging opponent for India in their opening match.
