India's Impressive Start in AFC U20 Qualifiers

India kicked off their AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers with an impressive 1-0 victory against Syria at the Do'stlik Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on August 31, 2026.

The match's only goal came from Shami Singamayum in the 86th minute, following a well-coordinated play with substitute Md Arbash, marking India's first competitive win over Syria in the U19/U20 category.

Syria's Persistent Pressure

Throughout the match, India faced significant pressure from the Syrian team but maintained their composure. Under the guidance of coach Mahesh Gawali, the team displayed solid defensive skills, achieving their fifth consecutive clean sheet, including four shutouts in pre-qualifier friendlies, as reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

In the first half, Syria's Alan Mamo tested Indian goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam with a powerful shot, which Suraj expertly saved, deflecting it for a corner. Another attempt from Abdulrahman Al Sarraj was easily handled by the confident Indian keeper.

Just before halftime, Syria nearly scored from a corner taken by Mamo, but captain Belal Almooslee's header narrowly missed the target.

Second Half Challenges

The second half saw Syria continue their offensive efforts. In the 58th minute, Al Sarraj set up Mahmoud Alhasan, whose chip shot was thwarted by Suraj. The closest Syria came to scoring was in the 73rd minute when Mamo's cross found substitute Ahmad Khalaf, but his header hit the crossbar, giving India a crucial escape.

Strategic Substitutions Lead to Victory

Recognizing Syria's dominance in attack, Gawali made strategic substitutions in the 79th minute, bringing on Md Arbash, Prashan Jajo, and Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, followed by Omang Dodum shortly after.

These changes revitalized India's offense. Just seven minutes after entering the game, Arbash played a pivotal role in the decisive goal. Shami initiated the attack, and after a slip from Alhasan, Arbash seized the opportunity, retrieving the ball in the penalty area and setting it up for Shami, who finished with a precise left-footed shot into the net.

This goal ignited celebrations among the Indian team, who held their ground in the final moments to secure a memorable win. India's next challenge will be against Uzbekistan on September 3 at 19:30 IST.
