India's Stance at the UN General Assembly

United Nations. India has strongly backed a resolution presented at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) calling for the immediate removal of economic, commercial, and financial sanctions imposed by the United States on Cuba.

India reiterated the necessity of lifting these restrictions to allow Cuba to fulfill its developmental aspirations and achieve economic progress.

Resolution Passed with Significant Support

The resolution was adopted with overwhelming support from 130 countries in the 193-member UN General Assembly. During the voting, 17 nations opposed the proposal, while 25 countries abstained from the voting process.

India's Position on Sanctions

Soumya Nair, a counselor at India's permanent mission to the UN, emphasized that the General Assembly has consistently called for the lifting of these sanctions. She stated that India firmly opposes any laws, regulations, or unilateral measures that adversely affect the sovereignty of other nations and hinder their citizens' prosperity and socio-economic development.

Impact of Sanctions on Cuba

Referencing a report from the UN Secretary-General, Nair highlighted the detrimental effects of these sanctions on Cuba's economy and infrastructure. The country's healthcare system is currently facing a severe crisis, with over 60% of essential medicines in short supply. Additionally, food production has plummeted by more than 50% over the past five years.

Energy Crisis and Essential Services

Recent increases in restrictions on fuel imports and exports have exacerbated the energy crisis in Cuba. This has severely impacted vital services such as healthcare, education, drinking water supply, food distribution, and transportation.

Call for Multilateralism and Cooperation

Reaffirming India's commitment to multilateralism, dialogue, and diplomacy, the Indian representative expressed hope that the global community would respect the spirit of cooperation and lift these sanctions promptly. This would enable the people of Cuba to fully participate in the global economy and international collaboration.
