India Strengthens Air Defense with Arrival of S-400 Squadron

India has marked a significant advancement in its air defense capabilities with the arrival of the fourth S-400 Triumph squadron from Russia. This addition, part of a larger procurement deal signed in 2018, aims to bolster the country's long-range air security network. The S-400 system, known for its advanced missile defense technology, has already proven its operational significance in past military engagements. With plans for additional squadrons and an indigenous defense project underway, India is committed to enhancing its military readiness in the face of evolving global threats. Read on to discover more about this critical development in India's defense strategy.

Significant Milestone in Air Defense

India has achieved another significant milestone in fortifying its airspace. The fourth squadron of the S-400 Triumph air defense system has arrived from Russia, enhancing the country's long-range air security network. This advanced missile defense system has been designated 'Sudarshan' within the Indian Army. According to defense sources, this modern system reached India via sea just a few days ago and is set to be deployed in a strategically important operational sector shortly.

Background of the S-400 Deal

In 2018, India signed a historic agreement with Russia to procure five S-400 air defense squadrons at an estimated cost of around ₹35,000 crores.

Current Operational Status

India already has three operational S-400 squadrons deployed along its strategic borders.

Delivery of the Fourth Squadron

The recent delivery of the fourth squadron will further enhance India's combat capabilities.

Impact of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict had caused delays in the delivery of the remaining two squadrons, but the supply chain has now resumed.

Fifth Squadron Expected Soon

The fifth and final S-400 squadron is anticipated to arrive in India within the next few months. Additionally, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement of five more S-400 squadrons to meet India's security needs.

Future Developments

India is also working on an indigenous program codenamed 'Project Kusha,' aimed at developing its own air defense systems capable of targeting enemy drones from long distances, similar to the Russian system. Solar Industries, a major defense company in India, is involved as a development and production partner in this project.

Role of S-400 in Operations

The S-400 played a crucial role during 'Operation Sindoor,' effectively neutralizing the capabilities of the Pakistan Air Force. It achieved a record by downing a significant surveillance aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force flying at over 300 kilometers altitude, marking the longest surface-to-air engagement to date.

Operational Significance

The S-400 missile system boasts a maximum range of 400 kilometers. During military engagements with Pakistan from May 7 to 10, the Indian Air Force extensively utilized the S-400 Triumf, demonstrating its operational importance.

Future Procurement Plans

Weeks after the conflict, a proposal was made to acquire another batch of the S-400 system. Russia has already trained a group of Indian personnel to operate this missile platform.

Advanced Defense Technology

The S-400 is regarded as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defense system, capable of tracking and neutralizing multiple aerial threats simultaneously.
