On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India's impressive achievement at the first-ever World Yogasana Championships, where the nation secured a remarkable 114 medals. He noted that this accomplishment signifies the increasing global acknowledgment of yoga and extended his congratulations to the athletes for leading the medal tally.
Global Participation in Yoga Celebrations
During the 135th episode of his monthly radio show, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi emphasized the worldwide observance of the International Day of Yoga. He remarked that individuals around the world united in India's mission to promote this ancient practice. "In June, we witnessed a global event where the world collaborated with India—International Yoga Day. This year, yoga events were organized at over 2,500 locations worldwide, with millions participating in various programs across India," he stated.
India's Dominance at the World Yogasana Championships
The World Yogasana Championships, hosted in Ahmedabad, saw India excel with a total of 114 medals, including an impressive 102 golds. PM Modi expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the victorious athletes. The event, held at the EKA Arena, featured 522 competitors from 78 nations, marking a pivotal moment for Yogasana as a competitive sport. Japan secured second place with three golds, three silvers, and five bronzes, while Argentina claimed third, thanks to Nabila Barraza's two golds and three silvers. The championship also showcased the sport's expanding international presence, with participants from Oman, Jordan, Iran, and the UAE, indicating Yogasana's growth as a competitive discipline in the Middle East.
International Day of Yoga: A Global Celebration
Observed annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga this year focused on the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," highlighting yoga's role in fostering long-term health and wellness across all ages. Prime Minister Modi led the national celebrations in Kolkata, performing yoga asanas alongside thousands at Red Road. Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India's proposal in December 2014, this day has been celebrated globally, with 2026 marking its 12th anniversary.
