India Set to Receive Fifth S-400 Air Defence System from Russia Early Next Year
India's Upcoming S-400 Delivery
New Delhi – India is expected to receive its fifth and final S-400 Air Defence System from Russia in January or February of next year. According to official sources, this delivery is part of a deal signed in 2018 between the Indian government and Russia, valued at $5.43 billion for five S-400 systems. A pre-shipment inspection team from India will visit Russia in December, after which the components are set to start arriving in India from January.
The Russian-made S-400 Triumph is a long-range surface-to-air missile system capable of accurately tracking and destroying fighter jets, missiles, drones, and aerial surveillance platforms. India received its fourth S-400 system in May-June 2026. Currently, three of the four systems are deployed along the western borders, while one is stationed in the eastern theater. During 'Operation Sindoor' in May 2025, this defence system showcased its capabilities by targeting an enemy airborne early warning aircraft from nearly 300 kilometers away.
In addition to the initial contract signed in 2018, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the 'Acceptance of Necessity' (AoN) for five more S-400 systems in March of this year, although a formal contract is still pending. Furthermore, India is evaluating the Russian short-range air defence system 'Pantsir'. Under a 'Buy and Make' arrangement, the inclusion of 52 Pantsir systems is being considered, with 13 units to be imported from Russia and 39 to be manufactured in India. This system will provide a protective shield for main defence systems like the S-400 and tank regiments against low-flying drones and cruise missiles.
