Strengthening Ties Between India and Russia

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized on Friday that India and Russia maintain a "steady, time-tested partnership." This statement follows recent comments from US President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose tariffs on India for its military purchases from Russia amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a press briefing that India's relationships with other nations should be evaluated on their own merits, rather than through the lens of third-party influences.

Jaiswal also highlighted the strong partnership between India and the United States, which is built on mutual interests and cultural connections. He expressed confidence that this relationship will continue to thrive despite various challenges.

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order reinstating reciprocal tariffs on various countries, including India, that have not established separate trade agreements with the US.

Earlier, Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from India and indicated that a penalty would be imposed on New Delhi for its military dealings with Russia. Although the tariffs are set to take effect on August 7, the executive order does not specify the nature of the penalty.

India's commerce ministry responded on Wednesday, stating that it is evaluating the potential impacts of the US's decision and will take necessary measures to protect its national interests.

Trump remarked that he is indifferent to India's actions regarding Russia, suggesting that both nations could face economic challenges together. He criticized India's high tariffs and noted the minimal trade between the US and Russia.
