India Raises Alarm Over Security Concerns in Bangladesh: What’s at Stake?
India's Diplomatic Concerns with Bangladesh
New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India summoned Riaz Hamidullah, the Bangladesh High Commissioner, to express serious concerns regarding the worsening security situation in Bangladesh.
The MEA specifically highlighted the alarming activities of extremist groups that have threatened to disrupt the security around the Indian diplomatic mission in Dhaka.
India firmly dismissed the misleading narrative being propagated by these extremist factions concerning recent incidents in Bangladesh.
The MEA also voiced its worries that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has not conducted a comprehensive investigation nor provided substantial evidence to India regarding these events.
"India shares a deep-rooted friendship with the people of Bangladesh, stemming from their liberation struggle and bolstered by various developmental initiatives. We advocate for peace and stability in Bangladesh and have consistently urged for elections that are free, fair, inclusive, and credible, conducted in a peaceful environment," stated the MEA.
India urged the Yunus-led interim government to uphold its diplomatic responsibilities by ensuring the safety of Indian missions and personnel in Bangladesh.
Earlier, on Sunday, India refuted claims made by the Yunus administration, reiterating its support for fair and peaceful elections in the neighboring country.
The MEA emphasized that India has never permitted its territory to be used for actions detrimental to the interests of the Bangladeshi people.
"India categorically rejects the claims made by the interim Government of Bangladesh in its press release dated December 14, 2025. We have consistently maintained our stance in favor of free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections in Bangladesh conducted in a peaceful atmosphere," the MEA remarked.
"India has never allowed its territory to be utilized for activities harmful to the friendly people of Bangladesh. We expect the interim Government of Bangladesh to take all necessary actions to ensure internal law and order, particularly for the purpose of conducting peaceful elections," it added.
